Make the change to a new era - a global challenge ?
Our planet is home to seven billion people and the challenges resulting from this enormous number are as diverse as the people themselves but one of the most essential challenges of them all is the quest for a new way of generating the amount of energy our society needs and supplying all people with the energy they need, since an energy supply is nowadays the foundation for all other essentials in our everyday life, like access to water, food, medical care, education, public transport the list goes on and on.
However added to the general problem of population growth, which results in an increasing demand for energy, today we are also threatened by a fast decrease of our fossil energy resources as talking of coal, oil and natural gas.
This all ends up in a scenario providing us with two major choices, which are on the one hand the possibility to carry on as before meaning a constantly growing exploitation of the natural resources left by the industrialized countries and the emerging countries.
Resulting from that would be an enormous injustice between the MEDCs and the LEDCs, due to the fact that the prices for fossil fuels would increase by the decrease of their availability which would lead us to a state in which the industrialized countries would be the only countries who could afford to pay the prices of fossil energy and the less economically developed countries would be forced to sell their remaining resources.
Added to those economical and social factors we would of course very soon have hardly any resources left which lead to an enormous support lack and probably wars and riots of some sort.
However we are not here to draw you a picture of an energy crisis we are here to show you how to prevent this state and as I mentioned earlier we do have a second option an alternative if you want to say it like that.
Because until this day we still have enough financial and natural resources to change our energy system from one that is primarily based on fossil fuels to a system that is based on renewable sources of energy.
During the resulting segue period we would need to distribute the remaining resources and to lower our energy consumption in order to get enough time out of the old system to build up the new one.
And we are not quite so much away from this state, as for instance the public awareness has increased steadily over the last decades and we have learned from sad chapters of history like Chernobyl and Fukushima that there are hardly any alternatives to renewable sources of energy.
The advantages of renewable energy are numerous they are in fact overwhelming but there is still one problem remaining: it is our society itself. Because until today we think of efficiency in a financial way rather than in a sustainable way, and due to this it is quite difficult to make the change.
Summing up this shows us the simplicity of the problem. We are living in a world that is constantly being contracted on a technological, political, cultural and economical way, which is why we need to work together in order to achieve this goal for a more sustainable and secure way of living on this planet.
As we see the challenge of establishing a renewable energy system is quite literally the most global of them all.
This project is aimed to give you an impression of the current state of both our old energy system and the development in the renewable sources of energy as well as to show you how long we can still rely on the old system and how fast we need to make a change.
